Read an Excerpt from Thousand Tambourines – a journal after the outcry

the following excerpt is from a journal entry titled Spelunking, dated July 2008.
 by Tzynya Pinchback-Lamar

The sound of Miss Mary clearing her throat breaks my fixed gaze. Now I am the one being studied. She reaches out to take my hands - red and swollen joints, skin split in the webbing, fingernails bitten down to the quick. I fold them into the sleeve of my sweater. Weeping eczema, I tell her, pulling away slightly not yet wanting review or repair. Being in the very fine café with her and Luanne exchanging curses and kisses is salve enough.

What can I get you today, she asks. I nod in the direction of the dessert case, open my mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. I want to tell Miss Mary about the drive home that afternoon. About my girl nesting in the back seat, picking at the elastic edge of her ankle socks, sounding out flowery words someone has taught to describe an act that does not blossom on the tongue, but lodges like jagged river stone in the throat. I want to tell her about the two of us alone in the car on the crowded highway, growing smaller and smaller with each syllable retelling a bed wet with fear that with night comes the summons: a gentle tugging of the blanket, a whisper, careful tiptoeing on the loose floorboard leading into the basement. My girl, who once tried to rescue a slug from the crevice between our living room window and screen, but for whom no help came when the Bible lesson included the secret a good Christian girl must keep for a father. Her big little voice breaking the silence; a thousand tambourines unearthing the dark. I want to tell Miss Mary how narrow the breath, tight the canal we now navigate, belly, breast, and face to an earth without water (God, no water!) in search of new light. But I say nothing and instead settle for a large slice of very fine shortcake. Berries with Chantilly cream on the side.

About the Authors

Elizabeth Lamar is a high school senior, student violinist, and snarky space cadet. She is also an abuse survivor and considers music the first of many creative interests she’s cultivated into personal expression. She loves words and believes how we choose to use words carve either a path of service or destruction. Elizabeth is creator of the Tambourines Project and co-author of its publication Thousand Tambourines - a journal after the outcry.

Tzynya Pinchback-Lamar makes poem, story, and memoir. She is author of the chapbook How to Make Pink Confetti (Dancing Girl Press, 2012) and is honored to share the inkwell with her daughter Elizabeth for Thousand Tambourines – a journal after the outcry.
